Elderly Care: Managing Aggressive Behaviour of Elders

Elderly Care: Managing Aggressive Behaviour of Elders

Aging is a natural phenomenon, specifying different stages of human life with a different level of physical and cognitive abilities. It works in a parabolic form, initiating from a weaker physical and mental stage of human in childhood, taking it towards the heights of physical and mental growth and development , and latterly a to decline in both powers in the elder age. This parabolic methodology can be modified to a very limited extent by using some artificial measure of medication, but cannot be altered completely.

In the social context, the third stage with the declining abilities is considered to be the most attention seeking, as it loses the ability of logical thinking, judgment abilities, and problem solving abilities, analytical thinking, and empathy. This stage is just like the very first one, but the difference in the both is that the initial one has no experience of material world ever before, so easy to mould in a desired way. But the elder age has a past experience of material and non material ups and downs, so the altering those experiences is not possible, but a balance in consequences of such experiences can be maintained.

Such state of decreased mental capabilities in combination with the lack of physical powers results in aggressive behaviour. This aggressive behaviour of an elder may result as a danger particularly to the elder or to others. The aggressive behaviour further hurdles in the social interaction, conduct with in the family etc and may cause the elder to suffer from continuous anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, and eating disorders. The aggression in this part of human life requires the caregiver to give his ears for. Though none too difficult, but this specific behaviour need others to keep their ears to the ground.

It is, however, of utmost importance to know the causes of elderly aggression. The causes may vary from person to person and situation to situation, but here we can generalize some of the causes. Loneliness/peerless ness, permanent illness, lack of entertainment options, deploying state of memory, misconduct of others etc are some of the most common causes of elderly aggression.

Knowing the cause is useless if no measures are taken to control the aggression. Do not ever try to confront the aggressive elder or do not try to discuss his aggressive behaviour with him, because he cannot logically understand his actions and its consequences. When the person is aggressive, try to provide him with a pleasant activity or topic to discuss. Minimize his stress. Do not discuss the topics which annoy the person. If the person is too aggressive to deal with, let him play with his aggression for the time being, and keep yourself calm, and make sure that you are safe. Sometimes elders may also get aggressive, when they try to attempt to accomplish a task and that’s difficult, you can help them out by dividing the task in smaller pieces.

Generalizing the causes of elderly aggression and figuring out some solutions for the same may help you to maintain a pleasant environment at your home. Pay a little heed to the elderly aggression case near by you, solve it, and have good time.

I interpret this article as addressing the more advanced stages of the combined level of physical and cognitive abilities where these conditions are concurrent with nonselective agression to individuals or groups. Further, to help my own clarification, I feel this article does not describe an elderly individual regardless of age, where the agression is directed to a single child (50 + years old), and for logical reasons mostly the childs behavour past and mostly present. Evaluation of the elder idicates only initial symptoms of some confusion and short term loss of memory in conversation. An elder with agression soley toward a child has reasons. Mostly reactive to the child's behavour and character flaws, eg. constant lying and insistance on always being correct, attempts to controll the elder's wealth.

I offer my response only to isolate a senario where the elder has excellent cognizant and physically ability, actually superb. Fully cares for herself, daily, short and longterm activities and responsibilities as well as managing the care of a different mentally disabled child 1 yr older than the other receiving the sporadic reactive aggression.
I believe this observation is appropriate in that the article suggests non-isolated or selective agression but eludes to non-selective aggression related to multiple not in direct contact or interaction with the elder.
