Health Benefits of Aromatherapy

The extraction of flowers and plants began over 6,000 years ago when the Egyptians used certain oils for medicinal and burial purposes.  However, the official term was created in 1930 by a French Chemist.  Lavender oil was used to treat soldiers in the World War 2.  It can be used many different ways.  Massage oils applied directly onto the skin during an actual body massage can kill germs and bacteria.  It also increases the resistance to illness by boosting the immune system.  Massage in itself can reduce tension by calming the nerves and depression and create rejuvenation.

In addition, they can also be enjoyed through our sense of smell.  The inhalation of these scents causes a chemical reaction in the body which releases Enkephalin, Endorphins, and Serotonin which causes feelings of relaxation and relieving stress.  It is also used in cosmetic products for the body, face, hair, promoting healthy skin.  By taking a bath with certain oils, a person can experience emotional and psychological benefits depending on which oils are used.

Chamomile is known for its calming effects and it’s used to treat all kinds of aches and pains.  Eucalyptus is used as an antiseptic and to treat sore throats, colds, and coughs.   Jasmine is thought to aphrodisiac and has been reported to speed up the labor process and to alleviate post partum depression.  Lavender is one of my favorites!  I have candles, body wash, and lotion with this lovely scent.  It’s used to treat insomnia, menstrual cramps, burn, insect bites and nervousness. In addition, it’s used as an ant-septic and antidepressant.   Peppermint is used to treat bad breath, aid in digestion, improve concentration, memory, mood, and encourages communication.

Rosemary, a popular seasoning in cooking, is used to treat headaches, arthritis, and the common cold.  Did you know the most common use of this is to increase memory?  Sandalwood is used to treat dry skin and acne, also known as a sedative it’s used to reduce stress and anxiety.  By incorporating essential oils into your lifestyle, your mind, body, and spirit will be refreshed and naturally revitalized.  Either way you look at it, aromatherapy smells good and has many healthy physiological and physical benefits.  So, why not try it if you haven’t already.
