You are probably thinking what?  A solar operated house sign, why? 

This is an idea I stumbled upon quite by chance while researching other matters on the internet.  It really caught my attention, firstly it pointed out the problem of identifying buildings which can occur because street numbering is confusing or a building simply doesn’t have anything to identify it by.  I thought to myself that is a fair point, I have actually been on a few house viewings in the evening and have struggled to find the properties in the first place.  I found that this company based in Cambridgeshire had actually developed a House Sign that was visible at night, not a tacky neon thing either.   They actually don’t look that different to other house signs during daylight hours and are understated and well designed.  They work on the same sort of principle that garden solar lights use so there is the added advantage of not putting drills and wires through your wall.  Other benefits are that the light will continue to come on even in a power cut and could also be of real benefit if you had to make a call out to the emergency services during the night.  The emergency services would be able to quickly and efficiently find your home.

I found this article in a Future Energies Magazine which explained all about the solar operated lights and their uses.  With energy costs rising all the time do we really want to be leaving a outside light on every evening so that someone can see our house number.  It is quite possible that savings could be made by investing in solar operated house signs that will continue to be alight even when we are tucked up snugly in our beds.  With fuel costs rising, at such a frightening rate this could be an energy saver well worth having.
